CEDEC Scholarship Report 09 / Daisuke Oka (Trident College of Information Technology)

Hello. My name is Daisuke Oka, and I am studying in the CG Specialist Department of the Trident College of Information Technology.

At school, my studies are focused on game graphics. I am working hard everyday to achieve my goal of becoming a 3D CG Designer who can work anywhere in the world.

It was my first time attending CEDEC last year. From the insight into how the games in stores and on the net are made, to the various people I got to meet, I was galvanized by my experience at the conference. I had a strong desire to attend CEDEC again this year, so I followed my college teacher’s recommendations, and applied for the scholarship. Fortunately, I was chosen as a scholar, and got a much deeper experience this year than the previous year.

The reason I wanted to attend CEDEC was because it is an excellent opportunity to hear from active developers things related to the industry that can’t really be taught in school, such as the state of the computer entertainment world, or what various companies are working on at the moment.

This time around, I mainly attended lectures related to the visual arts. Among those that I went to, I was especially interested in the session by Kitada Eiji. In it, Mr. Kitada gave his first-hand experience and reflections on working in an overseas CG studio after returning to Japan. He talked about the differences in environment and production styles between Japan and other countries, the differences in the understanding of CG technology, and how there is a lot to be learned from Japan’s CG production. While I believe the content of the lecture itself was oriented towards people who are currently involved in CG-related jobs, as someone who wants to work overseas in 3D computer graphics in the future, I still learned a lot from it. It was a lecture that made me reflect on the direction I should head towards for the future, and on the skills that I should learn. There were lots of other things I learned too from the other sessions, such as explanations on the technology that was incorporated to allow for graphics drawing on modern equipment. There were also places that allowed you to try out the latest technologies, and I got to experience using the Oculus.

I also had a very meaningful time from talking to and exchanging opinions with the people at the conference’s Developers’ Night, and at the game studios that we visited. I had passionate conversations with those people about what they were currently doing either at school or at work, and about what their dreams and ambitions were. Getting them to view and give feedback on my portfolio also led to me being greatly motivated to create more work. Even though I think that the students and the people in the industry had different ways of thinking, it seemed that they all had the same desire to create fun and interesting games. From this shared desire that has led everyone to gather at a conference like CEDEC and exchange opinions, I felt the fervor and passion from Japan’s game industry.

Those four days during the CEDEC scholarship was an anamzing experience. It was a rare opportunity for us, as students, to get to speak so closely with those currently in the industry. I will be sure to make good use of the knowledge I have gained from this experience, and to continue working hard towards my goals.

I am incredibly happy to be granted such an experience. To Mr. Ono, who was involevd in managing the scholarship, and to everyone at the companies we visited – Aiming, Tayutau, and GeePlus – thank you so much.

And to my fellow scholars, let’s continue honing our skills, and work hard towards being able to one day work together in the industry!
