CEDEC Scholarship Participant Report 02: Kanai Makoto (The University of Electro-Communications graduate school)

I am Kanai Makoto, a first year graduate student at the University of Electro-Communications. This year I took part in CEDEC as a scholarship participant.

During the CEDEC scholarship, the first day was spent visiting and speaking with three game companies, while the next three days we participated in the CEDEC conference held at Pacifico Yokohama, where we were able to listen to lectures on game development and meet with people who work in the game industry. We were introduced to the actual sites where games are developed, and as a result, we were able to learn about the techniques and know-how on the forefront of game development.

While all of the companies we visited were developing games that follow recent trends, I thought every studio exemplified a different direction. Aiming was a company that put a lot of work into MMOs for smartphones, where the communication with strangers that is characteristic of MMOs can be used as a weapon. Meanwhile, Tayutau was a company that looks to spread both high quality smartphone games and small scale games. Among other things, I felt that the management of the company’s own game communication site was unique. As a company that aims to be global, they take in a wide range of viewpoints. Finally, when visiting GeePlus, we were able to hear directly from the president of Polygon Magic, Mr. Tsurutani, about a wide range of topics, from the group’s organization to the latest business news. I got the impression that the entire company adopts a stance of sincerely tackling content creation, and nurturing ability in their employees rather than simply gathering talent. I felt that all three companies capitalize on their distinctive characteristics, which is why they have been able to survive in the industry.

At the CEDEC conference, aside from attending lectures, I was also able to participate in a get-together event called Developers’ Night. There, I could not only listen to speakers but also directly meet game developers, which was a truly valuable experience. I was able to attend lectures that interested me, such as sessions regarding game AI research, or about games I like. It was extremely stimulating not only for students hoping to enter the industry, but also for students who simply enjoy games, and even now my excitement has not cooled. I was especially interested in the lectures by Bandai Namco about generic game AI, by Monoliftsoft about the expansive map in Xenoblade Chronicles, and by Square Enix about their game made with a global outlook, called Heaven Strike Rivals. This experience has made it my dream to work on things like these after I enter the game industry.

This was an exceedingly valuable chance, that would not otherwise be possible, to listen to and speak with people who actually develop games. However, beyond that, perhaps the most stimulating aspect was being able to network with people my own age who possess amazing skills. I was shocked to find that students with such superior ability exist, who have already made games that are critically acclaimed. It was a good opportunity to focus my energy on working my hardest to not fall behind them!

The CEDEC scholarship was not only a great chance to see game development companies first hand, but also to learn about other people who hope to enter the game industry one day. Though my one regret was not networking more at events like Developers’ Night, as there is still time before I will begin searching for a job, I plan to do my best at other events like game jams. From now on I want to work hard at expanding my personal experience so that I can enter the industry.
