TGS 2015 Scholarship Participant Report 01: Shigeto Yoshida (Digital Hollywood Graduate School)

My name is Shigeto Yoshida, and I am a student at Digital Hollywood University’s graduate school, where I study methods of expression in VR games. I am currently seeking a job as a game planner.

As students applying to next year’s scholarship will be reading this, I hope my report can be of use to them.

Broadly speaking, my four days at the Tokyo Game Show scholarship were spent in the following way:

◎Day 1
[Game studio visits] ・Experiencing the work spaces of professionals
Visited companies: DeNA, LANDHO!, Aiming

◎Day 2
[Game Show business day 1] ・AM: Listened to the keynote speech
Speakers: President Hino from LEVEL-5, an executive from Dwango, others
・PM: Participated in the Japan Game Awards 2015 award ceremony

◎Day 3
[Game Show business day 2] ・AM: Free time
・PM: Went to Sense of Wonder Night

◎Day 4
[Indie Stream Fes 2015] ・Went to an indie game presentation event

Day 1: Studio tours

I was very grateful to be given the opportunity to hear directly from professionals about games.
Personally, the most valuable thing I gained was the realization that were definite differences between my image of what skills were needed to become a planner and what is actually demanded by the industry.
・DeNA
This company is a leader in the social game industry. We were given a tour of their offices and were given an orientation in which we learned more about sharing in fun through creating an original board game
During lunch, the scholarship students were split into groups depending on whether they wanted to become programmers, designers, or planners and had lunch with professionals in those fields as they gave us valuable advice.

・LANDHO!
We next visited the game developer LANDHO!, known for the horse racing game “Dabitsuku” and the “Just Dance” dancing games. We learned about the differences between publishers and developers from a development company’s point of view in a presentation given in both English and Japanese.

・Aiming
The final studio we toured was Aiming, which specializes in the development and operation of MMORPGs. I was struck by its founder’s statement during the company information session that “You can get bored of a game, but you won’t get bored of your friends,” as it succinctly expressed what is fun about MMORPGs. I was particularly surprised that Aiming had looked over our portfolios in advance of our visit and gave us time to speak directly with employees who worked in the fields we wished to enter.

[Day 2: Game Show business day 1]

On our second day, we visited the first day of Tokyo Game Show.

First, I have to comment on how few people there were when compared to the first day! I couldn’t hide my fanboyism when we were able to enter the event hall less than ten minutes after opening.

We had free time between the keynote speech and the Japan Game Awards 2015 and were able to freely look around the event.

・Keynote speech
Personally, the speech that left the greatest impression on me was President Hino of Level-5’s talk on hit content. Mr. Hino used his past examples such as the “Professor Layton,” “Inazuma Eleven,” and “Yokai Watch” series to explain the decisions he used as a manager to bring about these hit titles.
Mr. Hino, both a manager and a creator, left a strong impression on me with his parting words, “Managers shouldn’t be overprotective of their creators,” and “Don’t fail in your duty to have creators understand.”

・Japan Game Awards 2015 awards ceremony
Before the awards ceremony, there was an extravagant event in which Masahiro Sakurai from Sora, who received the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award gave his explanation of Ingress, a game that received the Game Designers Award. Ingress is a game with a large amount of specialized terminology that can be hard to explain to others, but Mr. Sakurai was able to give his commentary on the game in a way that anyone could understand in a short amount of time. I was able to learn a lot from it as someone hoping to become a planner in the game industry.

[Day 3: Game Show business day 2]

The Sense of Wonder Night held on the night of the third day was the highlight of the day.

In it, independent game developers submit unique ideas in competition for an award. All of the entries were novel, and many were surprising to just hear about.
From the “serpent sword controller” and “trick art-themed adventure game” to other games with elaborate presentations such as one presenter who only communicated through a keyboard, the night was like an exhibition of original ideas. As game planners are sometimes required to come up with novel ideas, the night was a very exciting one. I would recommend it to any other students who are hoping to become game planners

[Day 4: Indie Stream Fes 2015]

Finally, we reached the final day. On this day, I took part in a social gathering where indie game creators from both inside and outside Japan were gathered.

The event took place in a separate location close to Tokyo Game Show at around 7 at night, and I had the opportunity to speak with various game creators during this standing dinner party.

There were also corners where we could try indie games, and just like the previous day’s Sense of Wonder Night, I learned a lot from the originality of all the games.

Despite my poor English, I was also able to speak to indie game creators from overseas.
_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/_/

This was a valuable experience in which I was able to broaden my knowledge about the game industry over four days. I hope to use it to fuel my future efforts so that I can one day stand on the same stage as the creators I had the opportunity to speak with over the course of the scholarship.
